There are SO many types of bras on the market!

Not only do they serve different functions, but they’re not all ideal for every woman. This is why it’s so important to be aware of the variety and choose your bra types accordingly.

Here are 25 of the most common bras you can find today, and my recommendations for each one of them.

Let’s jump into it!

1. The Push-Up Bra

Recommended For

A-DD Cup, Full on Top.

What It Is

Because it has padding in the cups, a push-up bra will make your boobs look bigger. Push-up bras typically have sewn-in padding, but this padding can sometimes be removed. The more padding, the bigger your cup size will look. Some bras can even make you look 2 to 3 cups bigger.

2. The Minimizer Bra

Recommended For

F cup and above.

What It Is

The main function of a minimizer bra is to make your boobs appear smaller. Essentially, this is the opposite of a push-up bra! Minimizers therefore have no padding and usually have minimal lining.

A good minimizer bra will encapsulate the breasts, and not squish them together or smoosh them against your chest. It’s all about shaping and bringing the girls up, as well as minimizing.

3. The Plunge Bra

Recommended For

Smaller cups, full on top.

What It Is

A plunge bra is specifically made to accommodate low-cut shirts and dresses. Plunge bras have a low gore, meaning that the bra won’t be visible under anything low-cut. They can also be padded to enhance the look of your cleavage.

The U-Plunge of Deep Plunge bra (pictured above) is a type of plunge bra which allows for even lower cut dresses and shirts. The gore is extended into a U shape that leaves enough exposed skin for the bra to become invisible under garments. U-Plunge bras typically have less support than other bras.

What It Is

A backless bra will typically have some sort of adhesive and stick to your body, which eliminates the need for a band. The most common type of backless bra will have 2 adhesive bands on each side (right side in the picture above).

These bras are a great solution to backless dresses, but they don’t provide as much support as a traditional bra.

5. The Low-Back Bra

Every shape and size.

What It Is

Low-back bras most often come in the form of a bustier, which is closet to a corset. A low-back bustier bra is a great solution to low-back dresses, and it’s going to be complement every shape and size.

These are also often used under wedding dresses. Low-back bras have more or less of a low back, so make sure to choose the right one for your specific dress!

6. The Sticky Bra

1-sticky-boobs

Recommended For

A-C Cups.

What It Is

Sticky bras or “sticky boobs” are adhesive cups that we can stick on our breasts instead of wearing a traditional bra, which means they can be worn with backless and strapless dresses. They’re often separated and can be joined by a hook once applied. This brings the breasts together and creates a little bit of cleavage.

They’re useful for those with smaller cups and those who don’t need any support, as they don’t provide any support. They’re also unpadded.

7. The Longline Bra

1-longline

Recommended For

All shapes and sizes, especially plus sizes.

What It Is

A Longline bra is a bra that has a long band. This makes the bra more supportive and perfect for ladies with bigger breasts. They’re also meant to smooth the back and tummy area more than a traditional bra.

8. The Posture Bra

What It Is

Bralettes are softer bras that can be worn either under clothing, or on their own. They’re unlined and have no underwires or padding. They also have little to no structure, which means they offer no support.

They’re often made from lace and have a lot of detail, and they can peek through clothing while adding an interesting touch to an outfit.

Everyone!

What It Is

Strapless bras are meant to be worn with strapless dresses and shirts. Some strapless bras might offer less support than a traditional bra, but remember that your straps should not be supporting your breasts.

When choosing a strapless (or ANY) bra, make sure that the band feels tight enough. You should barely be able to fit 2 fingers at the back of your bra.

11. The T-Shirt Bra

Everyone. This is a staple!

What It Is

The reason why they’re called T-Shirt bras is because they can be worn under shirts seamlessly and with a smooth look. You shouldn’t be able to see any part of your bra under a tight shirt, as long as you’re wearing the right size and bra for you.

T-Shirt bras are typically lined and can be padded. They have very little decorative elements and smooth cups.

What It Is

A full cup bra refers to the portion of the cup that covers the breast, meaning that the cup covers the breast completely, or almost completely. A full cup bra is perfect for those with very large breasts, and many manufacturers provide full cup bras in a wide range of cup sizes.

13. The Demi Bra

Shallow breasts.

What It Is

A demi bra provides demi coverage, which is half the coverage of what we call a “full cup” bra. This means that the cup cover about half of your breast.

“Demi” refers to the cup alone, and these bras come in various styles. They can be lined or unlined, padded or unpadded, and wired or wireless.

14. The Balconette Bra

1-balconette

Recommended For

Even fullness.

What It Is

A balconette bra is a type of demi bra, meaning that the cups provide demi coverage (and cover about half of the breast). A balconette bra has a taller gore (or center) than a typical demi bra, and the bra will have a shelf effect.

What’s special about the balconette bra is that it provides a push-up effect and the gives the breasts a rounder appearance, especially if you’re full on top.

15. The Sports Bra

Everyone.

What It Is

A sports bra is what you should be wearing when you exercise! Sports bras are very supportive and help to reduce bounce while performing sports. Some sports bras are also more breathable and help with sweat.

There’s 2 big types of sports bras: compression bras, which crush the breasts, and encapsulation bras, which encapsulate each breast. Make sure to choose the second type if your breasts are over an A cup! More in my guide below.

16. The Bustier Bra

Recommended For

All shapes and sizes

What It Is

A bustier is similar to a corset, but it’s not adjustable. Unlike a corset, it also only reaches down to the waist or ribcage. A bustier can be worn with a variety of dresses, especially wedding dressing. This is because they’re often accommodating to strapless and low-back garments.

Because a bustier covers a bigger area than bra, it’s good at shaping and smoothing the upper back.

17. The Convertible Bra

Recommended For

Everyone!

What It Is

A convertible bra has removable straps which can be criss-crossed and mixed to match a variety of garments. These bras can become strapless, single-strap, racerback, and more depending on the specific bra model.

This is a practical bra to have, as it can be worn both everyday or for special occasions and dresses.

18. The Wireless Bra

Belvia
Belvia

Recommended For

Younger girls (training bras), comfort.

What It Is

A wireless bra doesn’t have underwires, which are typically the metal U-shaped lining under each cup. This lining is what helps to shape, support, and lift the breasts.

Since wireless bras don’t have underwire, they’re much less supportive. Nevertheless they’re sometimes preferred for their comfort, and some nursing bras are wireless.

19. The Bandeau Bra

1-bandeau

Recommended For

Smaller cups.

What It Is

A bandeau bra (from the French word “bandeau”, meaning a “strip”) is essentially a strip of fabric that wraps around the breasts and torso. These bras most often lack structure as they have no underwire, which means that they don’t provide any support.

A bandeau bra can sometimes be worn on its own or as part of a bikini.

20. The Maternity Bra

Dita Von Teese

Recommended For

Nursing moms!

What It Is

A maternity bra allows you to easily nurse your baby without the need to remove your bra. The cups have flaps which can be open and closed using only one hand, while holding your baby with the other.

Nursing bras are often comfortable and sometimes have no underwire. They come in a variety of styles.

21. The Front Closure Bra

1-front-closure

Recommended For

Everyone.

What It Is

A front closure bra is simply a bra that has a hook-and-eye closure in the front, typically where the gore sits. Having this closure on the front makes it easier for some women to put on and remove a bra. It can also relieve back pressure.

22. The Racerback Bra

1-racerback

Recommended For

Everyone.

What It Is

A racerback bra refers to the back straps, which criss-cross at the back. This means that racerback bras can be worn with tops and dresses that have similar backs. Many sports bras have a racerback, since this offers tighter support.

23. The Shelf Bra

Foxy Lingerie

Recommended For

Sexy time!

What It Is

A shelf bra (not to be confused with a balconette bra) is a bra that forms a shelf under the breasts, thus having no cups that go over the breasts and exposing them.

24. The Cage Bra

1-cage

Recommended For

Everyone.

What It Is

A cage bra contains decorative straps either below or above the band, giving the bra a “caged” appearance. These bras only serve a decorative function and aren’t a part of the bra’s structure.

25. The Post-Mastectomy Bra

mastectomy

Recommended For

Post-mastectomy patients.

What It Is

A post-mastectomy bra is meant to be worn after a mastectomy surgery, where one or both breasts are removed. Post-mastectomy bras have pockets inside each cups, allowing the insertion of a prosthetic. Many post-mastectomy bras are also wireless, allowing for more comfort after the surgery.
