Do you want to enhance your cleavage and create a fuller, rounded shape? Are you looking for the perfect bra to wear under your low-cut tops? A demi cup bra or balconette bra is what you need.
What’s a Demi Bra?
A demi bra (also called a demi cup bra or half cup bra) is a bra that offers less coverage in the cup. The cups of a demi bra are approximately half of the coverage provided by a full-coverage bra, hence its name; “demi” means “half” in French (see pictures 1 & 2). Any bra that fits this description is called a demi bra, no matter its look or material. Demi cup bras can be smooth or lacy, padded or unlined, push-up or not.
What’s a Balconette Bra?
A balconette bra, sometimes called a balcony bra, is a sub-type of demi bra. It provides less coverage than your average demi cup bra and cups the lower half of the breast only, forming a horizontal or almost-horizontal line (see picture 3). It also traditionally has more of an uplifting effect and creates dramatic cleavage, and there’s a clear distinction between the cups and straps: the straps are thin and barely hold the cups. Balconette bras are sexy, revealing, and often contain lace, embroidery, or ornaments.
Who Should Wear a Demi or Balconette Bra?
Anyone can wear a demi cup bra. That being said, these types of bras work better for some breast types than others. Those with smaller to average sized breasts generally love demi bras because of the uplift and comfort they provide. If you have separated breasts or wide-set breasts, definitely give demis and balconettes a try as well! Because their center gore is typically wider, they keep the breasts separated and in place.
The biggest issue with this type of bra is spillage. This is because it provides less coverage — not only in the cup, but also the sides. If you have large breasts, or if your breasts are full on top, you might have spillage problems while wearing a demi, even when wearing a size that truly fits. You can still wear demis and balconettes on occasion if you love the look, but consider a full-coverage bra for everyday use!
In addition to this, those with narrow or droopy shoulders might have issues with the straps of their balconette bra. Because the straps on these bras are typically farther apart, some might have issues with them sliding off their shoulders. Similarly, this bra is perfect for those with broad shoulders.
What Can I Wear It With?
A demi bra can be worn with almost anything. It’s a must-have everyday bra for those with smaller or average breasts, and provides great lift and cleavage without any padding. Wear a balconette bra under a shirt with a low neckline or a V-neck shirt for extra oomph. Your bra won’t show at all and your bust will look fuller!
